What Does Pistis Sophia Mean?
Pistis Sophia is a Greek name that can be translated as “Faith-Wisdom” or “Faith and Wisdom.” The word pistis(πίστις) means faith, trust, or faithfulness, while sophia (σοφία) means wisdom.
In the Pistis Sophia, however, the name refers to more than these two words. Pistis Sophia is a heavenly being whose story becomes one of the central narratives of the text. She longs for the higher Light she sees above her and, in reaching toward it, leaves her appointed place. She descends into the lower regions of the cosmos, where hostile powers seek to take away her light.
In her distress, Pistis Sophia turns toward the Light. Again and again, she expresses her repentance and calls for help. Eventually, she is heard, rescued, and raised from the chaos.
Her story can therefore also be understood symbolically. Pistis is not merely belief in a doctrine; it can express trust in and faithfulness toward the Light. Sophia is wisdom—a wisdom that has become separated from its higher origin and seeks to return to it.
In this sense, Pistis Sophia can be seen as an image of the spiritual journey itself: the fall from the Light, the awakening to one’s condition, the turning back toward the Light, and ultimately restoration.
The title Pistis Sophia is also used for the ancient Coptic manuscript in which her story is preserved. The work presents teachings of the risen Jesus to his disciples and gives a particularly prominent role to Mary Magdalene, who repeatedly interprets and responds to his teachings.
Thus, the question “What does Pistis Sophia mean?” has more than one answer. Literally, it means Faith-Wisdom. Within the story, it is the name of a heavenly figure. And on a deeper level, Pistis Sophia represents the journey of wisdom seeking its way back to the Light.
